Welcome to the April issue of the Beltring Bugle
The official newsletter of
The KM, IMPS War and Peace Show - July 16th - 20th 2003

It's that time again where we slide into top gear for the run down to the KM War and Peace Show 2003. Our last Beltring Bugle, the longest one so far created a whole host of responses. Much to our amazement, of all the letters we received we only had one non supportive reply and to that author all I have to say is we loved the stamp. Did you have it made and where can you buy them? And yes Fred does exist. I was amazed at how many people knew whom I was writing about and as far as we know he is still alive and well.

Health & Safety Last week saw the second monthly meeting of the War and Peace Workers Party, held once again at The Hop Farm Country Park. These meetings are productive and enjoyable. Reminiscent of past IMPS Club Meetings. This meeting gave all the officials time to listen to the more in-depth workings providing a greater understanding of the roles played at the War and Peace Show by Kent Priority Care, represented by Dr Chris Wadsworth who's team provides the medical care needs for the entire show ground for seven days and nights. Dr Chris was then followed by Fire Officer Steve Shirley, who's team provide full fire & emergency cover for the show ground. Working in conjunction with Kent Priority Care and The War and Peace Management both Chris and Steve have carried out their roles at the show for the last ten years, and have an intimate knowledge of the ground layout and the vast multitude of people who go to making up the worlds favourite show.

Show Promotion. Fiona Pollard gave all those assembled an insight into the working of the Hop Farm Marketing department, its role in respect of The KM War and Peace Show, clearly outlining for one and all the massive amounts of input made ensuring the public turn out to support the show. After 21 years and a high volume marketing campaign for the past five years encompassing television, radio and over 21 different newspapers there are still people in Kent who have never heard of The KM War and Peace Show. This year has seen a new partnership in promotion with English Heritage and The Fab 40's Weekend at Dover Castle. Which I am sure many enthusiasts will be involved in. During the meeting Fiona asked for volunteers to help hand out War and Peace leaflets. Thanks to those who stepped forward. A further 20,000 will be handed out at forthcoming shows. The get together concluded over dinner and a couple of pints to the total satisfaction of all who attended. I look forward to our next meeting.

Vehicle Entries. At the time of going to print are rolling in at the usual pace. This said, we want to remind exhibitors that part of the new Health & Safety requirements are that exhibitors, campers, re-enactors, stall holders etc. must be pre booked. The days of mass late entries or just turning up at the gate are over. If you wish to attend The War and Peace Show, please pre book as people who arrive at the gate without pre booking are subject to greater entry costs. Late booking forms will be going out shortly, so please return them as soon as possible.

IMPS at War and Peace. It gives me great pleasure to advise you all that The Invicta Military Vehicle Preservation Society will be holding its annual Jeep Raffle, this year, promoted by Diane Marshall. For the first time the prize Jeep is a post war M38 A1. Which I am sure you will all have the chance to see as it attends the shows in its run up to the draw which will take place in the main arena on Sunday 20th July at approximately 3 pm. Back at The War and Peace office we wish Diane all success with the raffle. Looking back when Nigel Hay and I first started the Jeep Raffle, it was nothing but hard work. Comments like "I already have four Jeeps" or "I would rather win a new kitchen" were common place. So give the lady a break and buy those tickets.

On the subject of The IMPS. I was recently contacted by Jon Burford the new club Chairman, who suggested that as we had once been friends it may well be appropriate for us to meet and hear what each other had to say. So a mutual meeting place was agreed upon and a couple of week ago Jon and I met for lunch in Rochester. We selected what looked like a good pub and settled down to an excellent lunch. In a nutshell we both agreed that there would always be issues we would not be able to agree upon, but this should not stop us being able to mend some bridges and work together for the mutual benefit of IMPS and The War and Peace Show. As we finished our meeting and walked back to our cars I genuinely felt that there was a future for both groups, and we wish Jon all success in his endeavours to bring the IMPS club back to where it had been. On a personal note, I enjoyed the lunch and the company and look forward to our next meeting.

Rules & Regulations. As I am sure everyone by now is wondering how do the new rules affect me. Here are some of the basic guidelines, although you will discover we have worked hard not to allow too many changes to take place. Exhibitors can still camp in their groups alongside their caravan, motorhome or tent. Support vehicles have to be in the support vehicle park by 9 am until 6 pm on the days of the show unless otherwise agreed. The main change is the lack of vehicle movement going over the bridge to the stall area between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm. There will be no vehicle movement in this area unless otherwise agreed. In our negotiations with Health & Safety and the various other bodies we are dealing with, they have concluded that The War and Peace Show has a unique & special feel about it and all of us are working together to try and preserve this within the usual format of the show whilst working within the new guidelines. Here are some of the basic rules for your information;
· On arrival please report immediately to the booking office - this will be open daily from Friday 12th July between the hours of 8.00 am and 10.00 pm
· You will be processed and issued with an identity wristband which must be clipped and worn at all times. WITHOUT THIS BAND CLIPPED AROUND YOUR WRIST YOU WILL BE REFUSED ENTRY TO THE SHOWGROUND.
· At booking in you will be asked to read and acknowledge the showground Health & Safety rules. Please take time out to understand and therefore ensure you can comply with them at all times.
· Please respect the instructions of all white shirted Officials and Marshals - they are working hard to put on a safe and good show for everyone.
· Stall holders arriving to set up their pitch on the show days will not be allowed onto the stall holders field between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm as vehicle movement will be forbidden during these hours for public safety.
· NO vehicle movement around the stall area between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm, this includes forklifts, motorcycles, quad bikes and any other mechanically propelled vehicle.
· All support vehicles must be removed each morning by 9 am latest. If they are found blocking aisles after this time they will be removed.
· As requested by the Fire Inspection Officer all stall holders MUST have an appropriate serviceable fire extinguisher on their pitch.

We look forward to seeing you again at the show - 16th to 20th July 2003

Please see below for an explanation of the new charges and booking in forms.

30th April 2003

Dear Exhibitors,

After numerous requests I have been asked to write and explain the new charges and booking in forms. I have broken these down in sections and hopefully this will explain the correct position. Well here goes.

Military Vehicle Entry
If you enter one military vehicle it entitles you to the following;
2 adult passes
2 child passes
Free camping for caravan or tent from Friday 11th to Monday 21st July.
Access to all areas of the show except the ticketed Miller nights on Friday and Saturday.
If you are towing a trailer/artillery piece or a second vehicle, which you have entered, but not requesting additional adult or child passes the total cost is £25.

Second Vehicle Entries
If you have entered a second vehicle or more and not applied for any more passes then please contact the War and Peace office for advice on costs. If you are entering a second or more vehicles and have requested extra passes relevant to these vehicle entries, then these will be classed as a full vehicle entry and charged at £25.00 giving you your 2 adult and 2 child passes for each extra vehicle entered.

Support Vehicles
If you have entered a vehicle that cannot practically travel by road, whether it be by design e.g. tracked or related to distance/age. Then there is no charge for the support vehicle, although the support vehicle and trailer must be parked in the secured parking area between the hours of 9am and 6pm during the 5 days of the show.

Bringing a Caravan
If you have entered a military vehicle and paid your £25 there is no charge for the caravan.
If you are then towing the caravan to the show with a civilian vehicle and wish to keep this vehicle on site for the duration of the show, then there is a £25 charge. Support vehicles do not entitle you to extra passes, should you not wish to pay the charge then there is free parking in Paddock Wood.

Camping
If you have entered a military vehicle and wish to camp in either a caravan/tent/motorhome in your normal spot with your friends alongside your military vehicle there is no charge.

Stalls
Contrary to rumour a 20' stall pitch price has increased from £15 per day to £25 per day and at time of writing there are only 3 rows left available. A 20' pitch for a recent 1-day Militaria fair was £80 and at another show a 20' pitch for 1 day was £240. The MVT show at Kemble is £30 per day for 20' frontage, this still makes War and Peace stalls great value.

Bicycles
If you enter a military vehicle with 2 adult passes and 2 child passes and wish to bring a military bicycle there will be no charge for the bicycle.
If you have entered a bicycle and obtained 2 adult passes and 2 child passes, there will be a £25 fee. There would be no charge for your civilian vehicle, as it would be classed as an essential support vehicle for you to be able to attend the show.

Re-enactors
If you wish to enter the War and Peace Show as a re-enactment group you must complete the correct form. A list of all named participants attending must be completed and attached along with full details of your proposed display. If as an individual you wish to attend and join a display, you must speak to the leader of the display and have your name added to their list of attendants. If you wish to travel alone and just join in, then there is a fee of £30, which entitles you to arrive on the 11th of July and depart on the 21st of July. Vehicle entries for re-enactment displays are FREE OF CHARGE.

Camping for Re-enactors
Camping for re-enactors is in quiet camping or on your display, there is no charge for your tent/caravan/motorhome.

Civilian Camping
If you wish to arrive in a civilian vehicle and erect a tent, or set up a caravan/motorhome this will be classified as public camping and the fees are as follows;
7 days Adults £75 Children £50
3 days Adults £50 Children £30
These costs only apply if you are not exhibiting or a re-enactor and only wish to camp.

Public Entry
If you wish to stay in a hotel and visit the show daily, you may pay at the public gate entrance each day 16th &17th July £7.50 adult, £6.50 child/senior or £25 for a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children. 18th, 19th and 20th July £12 adult, £10 child or £42 for a family ticket or you can purchase a three day pass for £30 adult £25 child.

Club Detachment
If you wish to enter your military vehicles as a club and do all the bookings on behalf of your members, we will offer you a discount on your booking, also you may camp together as you have always done in the past.

Late Bookings
Due to the new requirements by the Health and Safety Executive, all entries must be received by July the 1st 2003. All late entries that arrive at booking in without paperwork will be asked to pay £50 per vehicle entry to cover the burden of administrative costs. Please make sure you pre-book and pay before the 1st of July 2003.

Norfolkline
As in previous years we have a special deal with Norfolkline Ferries, you can cross the channel for £60 each way with a vehicle of up to 5 metres carrying 5 people. There are no time penalties on these crossings, if you wish to arrive in England on the 10th of July and depart on the 21st of July the cost is still £60 each way. Vehicles over 5 metres pay an extra £12 per metre each way, although you are still entitled to carry up to5 persons each way.

In conclusion, if you were to enter the War and Peace Show in your military vehicle towing a caravan behind it, or carrying a tent and arriving on Friday 11th of July and departing on Monday 21st July, your cost would be £2.50 per day. This is less than the price of a pint of beer or a burger for up to a family of 4 to camp and enjoy the worlds largest military vehicle show, which still makes this the cheapest place in the world to go for a 10 day holiday.

We trust this statement has answered all those niggling questions and we look forward to welcoming you once again to The KM War and Peace Show.

Best wishes

Rex Cadman
